Picked up a piece of electronics I was interested in on one occasion, the bottom was covered in roach feces. I don't expect the cleanest stuff at a thrift shop, but that was exceptionally gross. Any time I have a problem here the manager just blows me off. The prices are always rising too, strange considering they don't actually purchase any of the merchandise they sell.
Have shopped for years at several stores and the pricing were reasonable and items better. Now most items are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. Who is setting the prices? Don't they know its supposed to be a thrift shop and not a department store?
Selection is better than Goodwill right down Rt. 22, but Goodwill has many more name-brands. I have a few problems with Unique Thrift: 1. Many employees don't care about giving good customer service, but many are outright nasty. 2. Prices are creeping up. DVDs used to be $1.49 each here; now I've seen a single DVD priced at $6.99. A set of 10 really cheap toy cars with the original $1.00 Dollar General price tag on it is priced at $8.99. That's absolutely ridiculous! At Goodwill, if you show an employee that the original tag is on and that their price is higher (and that the item isn't from 1928!), they will charge you whatever the original price tag says. Unique refuses to change prices, because they are simply a corporation trying to make money. That brings me to problem 3. Unique Thrift is a for-profit corporation, not a charity like Goodwill. They "support" charities as they claim, but according to a recent study done by the Star-Ledger, only 7% of their profits actually go to charity. Overall, if you're just looking for something cheap, and you don't care about the quality (for example, props/costumes for a play), come here, then Goodwill. If you want higher quality (and in some cases, slightly higher prices), go to Goodwill.
I called to ask about a bed frame and the lady said that I would have to come in and look for it. Really? So I live in Belleville and I'm supposed to come and look through your store and hope for the best...SMH Great salesmanship...
Low level employees there are friendly. Management treats its customers and employees like trash. I used to go there to find interesting CDs for a dollar, now they're asking up to 2.49, too much for 20-year-old as-is, non-refundable merchandise especially when I eat up so much gas driving there. They are beginning to treat it more as a normal retail store than what it is supposed to be, a place to find cheap junk.
